John Constable 1776 –1837

Description This painting was done in pencil and painted in water color. Artwork features the mountains, a bay of water and a walking trail with a man sitting on a rock and what looks like two women and a child walking his way. It is signed in the lower right ‘John Constable’ in pencil. A hand written inscription reads “view of the 12 apostles in Camps Bay” and under that, "Taken from (looks like "Gufer") and “For Charles from Mother”. John Charles Constable was the son of John Constable and his wife, Maria. The inscription suggests Maria Constable gave this piece to her son Charles, adding a family connection to this piece.

Condition The condition is very good with some signs of wear or deterioration on the edges from the framing. The details are very clear and first pencil marks can be seen from the original pencil drawing prior to color. Frame is not original. Paper back is intact but taped to hold it in place. Size 13” x 11 ½” Framed Size: not measured
